Big Cats
14 day expedition

The Southern Serengeti in July is a completely transformed place from the popular tourist impression of February and March, when the plains are teeming with calving wildebeest and zebra. In February and March, the Wildebeest are dropping their gambolling calves on the phosphorous rich plains, and the associated prides of lions and packs of hyenas are never very far behind.

The movement of the larger herbivores to other parts of the Serengeti/Mara ecosystem, results in lions also moving out of the area to more permanent waterholes where larger prey items may still be found. So, you may ask, what is the attraction to the area in July? The vacuum created by the northward moving wildebeest and zebras, as well as the absence of some larger predators creates an idyllic environment for Thompson and Grant’s Gazelles. These gazelles, in turn, attract the stars of the plains and our reason for going there… Cheetahs.

This safari is limited to 6 participants. We will have two vehicles with three rows at each location, and one C4 guide on each vehicle. All flights, transfers and logistics are included in the cost of the safari. This safari combines seamless travel logistics, comfortable and luxurious accommodation, and sensational wildlife. If you have ever wanted to head out in search of the ultimate image of each of the big cats, then this safari is the best opportunity you will have of achieving it.

It is always dangerous to generalise in wildlife viewing and photography, but a day on these plains usually results in multiple cheetah sightings ranging from single animals, coalitions of males, to females with cubs. The art comes in finding the right sighting with which to spend time and then, hopefully, action photography will ensue.

Kusini Lodge, nestled in the granite koppies and woodland, provides the perfect place to explore this area from. Friendly staff, great food, stunning views and comfortable accommodation make the journey easy, while the excellent guides hopefully and us our spotted subjects.

And the best part of the southern Serengeti... the solitude! There are very few other vehicles in this area in July, creating an awesome sense of wilderness and great quality of sightings. This truly is the ultimate cheetah experience!

"This dedicated photo safari is unashamedly about locating the ultimate locations in Africa for each one of the large cats: cheetah, leopard and lion."

You will be met by a Legendary Lodge representative who will transfer you to Legendary Lodge for one night, the perfect place to relax for the evening. Your C4 photographic guides will meet you at the Lodge and discuss the proceedings for the trip over dinner.

Day 2 to Day 5

Sanctuary Kusini Camp, Tanzania

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Arusha Airport for your scheduled flight into the Serengeti. An extra seat has been booked for the flight for extra luggage weight (15kg per seat is allowed). Upon arrival at the Serengeti South Airstrip (SGS) in the Serengeti National Park, a Kusini camp driver will meet us and transfer us to Kusini Camp for your 4 night stay. You will enjoy game drives in the mornings and evenings, whilst being tutored by your photographic guides.

Sanctuary Kusini offers a Serengeti safari like no other. This is the only permanent camp in this unspoilt and remote part of the Serengeti, and every year wildebeest congregate on the camp’s “doorstep”. Perfectly set in the remote southern part of the Serengeti, Sanctuary Kusini’s location was specially selected after much research by our guides and the local experts. It overlooks the plains where game and predators are a common sight all year round. Predators are never far off, as they are always nearby for an opportunistic meal. Sightings of cheetahs, lions and black backed jackals are all relatively common, and there is a strong possibility of seeing a hunt, or even a kill!

Day 6

Tambo Intercontinental Hotel

After your last game drive and breakfast at Kusini Camp, you will be transferred back to the Serengeti South Airstrip (SGS) for your scheduled flight back to Arusha Airport. An extra seat has been booked for the flight for extra luggage weight (15kg per seat is allowed). From here you will be transferred back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your international flight to OR. Tambo International Airport, South Africa. You will enjoy one nights stay at the OR. Tambo Intercontinental Hotel.

Day 7 to 11

Main Camp, Mala Mala

After breakfast, you will walk back to the airport for your scheduled flight to the Mala Mala Airstrip. A Main camp representative will meet you at the airstrip and transfer you to Mala Mala Main camp for 4 nights.

Mala Mala Game Reserve lies strategically sandwiched between the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Wildtuin. The unfenced borders between Mala Mala and the Kruger National Park on one side, and the Sabi Sand Wildtuin on the other allow animals to migrate unhindered to the perennial Sand River, which flows north to south through Mala Mala for 20 kilometres (13 miles). This well-preserved wilderness is a “honey-pot” to the most sought-after wildlife species, as well as a host of smaller creatures.

The ochre-coloured buildings of Mala Mala Main Camp are clustered amid shady trees and manicured lawns overlooking the Sand River. The individually decorated, spacious and comfortable rooms under traditional thatching, offer spectacular views of the river and the wild- including bird life that are attracted to the water for refreshment and refuge from the hot African sun. The rooms are equipped with “his-and-hers” bathrooms, 24 hour temperature control, insect proofing, direct dial telephones, a mini-bar and a mini-safe. Despite the comfort offered, Mala Mala retains an authentic bushveld camp atmosphere, where the attention to detail, for which Mala Mala is world-famous, shines through.

Day 15

After your last game drive and breakfast, you will be transferred to the Londolozi Airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Tambo International Airport. You will be in time for your international flight back home.

Day 12 to 14

Founders Camp, Londonozi

After an early morning game drive and breakfast, you will be transferred via road to Founders Camp, Londolozi for your 3 night stay there.

Londolozi Founders Camp is a classic safari camp in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, and provides the perfect location for a predator safari. Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve is a premier Big 5 game viewing destination and guarantees excellent sightings, with notoriously elusive leopards as a speciality.

Leave at dawn and again in the late afternoon on guided game drives with an expert ranger and private photographic guide Shem Compion, and Andre Cloete in search of the big predators and other classic animals - you’ll return to camp via a spotlit night drive to tick off some of Africa’s rarer creatures.
